My company serves small and midsize companies based in New Jersey, providing human resources consulting. As an expert in federal and New Jersey employment law, I help businesses mitigate risk through services such as employee handbook development, coaching management with sensitive employee matters, and management training.
After working in Human Resources for over 25 years, all with large Fortune 500 companies, I decided to venture out on my own and start a human resource consulting business.
I saw SCORE advertised and thought it would be a good idea to speak with experienced business people to ensure I was not doing anything which might hinder the success of my business.
I have been mentored by Alvin Star and Mike Glicksman since the beginning; they provided invaluable advice and support. A big challenge of mine was the development of a pipeline of business and Alvin, who worked in business development for years, provided me with the strategic direction needed to help me grow a robust list of prospects. Mike, having grown his own very successful business, provided me with a valuable perspective that helped me in developing my HR service offerings.
Talk to as many people as you can who also own their own business or who are working in areas which you may not be well-versed. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake and pivot based on experience. Understand it will take some time before you realize the fruits of your labor so prepare yourself mentally for failure in the beginning. Learn from your mistakes.
